Why Antwerp?

Why a city break in Antwerp?

Antwerp is compact, easy to explore on foot, and combines Rubens, diamonds and fashion — the airport is 20 minutes from the centre.

Antwerp lies on the river Scheldt and is Belgium's second-largest city after Brussels. In the 16th century it was one of the wealthiest trading cities in Europe, and the architecture still bears witness to it — at the Grote Markt with its guild houses and Brabo Fountain, at the Handschoenmarkt in front of the Cathedral of Our Lady, and along the elegant boulevards. The historic centre is compact and mostly a pedestrian zone.

Peter Paul Rubens lived and worked here. His house and studio is now a museum, and several of his altarpieces hang in the cathedral. Alongside it stands the KMSKA, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, holding one of the most important collections of Flemish painting — from Jan van Eyck to James Ensor. The MAS on the northern harbourside covers city history from an architectural landmark by Neutelings Riedijk.

Two further things make Antwerp special: the Diamond District near the central station, through which a large share of the world's rough-diamond trade passes; and the fashion scene around the Fashion Academy. And Antwerp Central Station itself — an art nouveau train hall from 1905 — is considered one of the most beautiful stations in Europe.

What is there to do in Antwerp?

Antwerp is small enough to cover on foot over two days. The old town with the Grote Markt, Cathedral and Scheldt forms the centre; north-west of it lies the docklands district with the MAS Museum. Near the station begin the Diamond District and the shopping street Meir. In the south, Zurenborg and 't Zuid draw with art nouveau architecture and gallery quarters. For a first visit, two full days in the centre and one day around the harbour and Zuid is a good rhythm.

When is the best time to visit Antwerp?

Antwerp has a maritime climate: rarely hot, rarely very cold, but often damp. Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant, with mild temperatures and long days. Summer is warm but never extreme, and the terraces along the Scheldt fill up. In November it can be grey; from mid-November the Christmas Market runs on the Grote Markt and Groenplaats. In January and February the city is at its quietest — good conditions for museums and slow days.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Antwerp Airport lies right on the south-eastern edge of the city — only around 20 minutes to the centre.

Buses and taxis run, and you can add the transfer to your booking. Because the airport is small, distances are short and check-in on the return runs quickly. For onward travel, Antwerp Central Station is very well connected: fast trains to Brussels take 40 minutes, and to Amsterdam or Paris via Thalys within a couple of hours.
