Why Bolzano?

What makes Bolzano special as a destination?

Bolzano is just 10 minutes from the airport, combines Italian city culture with Alpine surroundings and is directly connected to the Dolomites via three cable cars.

Bolzano is the provincial capital of South Tyrol and, at 265 metres, sits at the lowest point of the region — where the Isarco and Talvera rivers meet the Adige. The climate reflects that: hot in summer, rarely below freezing in winter. Bilingualism here (German and Italian) is not a formality but daily life.

The centre is compact: Piazza Walther with the cathedral, the medieval arcaded shopping lane known as Portici (Lauben), and the Fruit Market with its stalls. Everything is within walking distance. From the station, three cable cars climb straight to the Renon plateau, San Genesio and Colle — city and mountain without needing a car.

The city's most famous attraction is the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, home to Ötzi the Iceman — the roughly 5,300-year-old glacier mummy found in the Ötztal Alps in 1991. Add to that Runkelstein Castle with its medieval fresco cycles, and the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian at Sigmundskron Castle, founded by mountaineer Reinhold Messner.

What is there to do in Bolzano?

Bolzano works on two levels. Down below, the city with its old town, museums and wine bars; up above, the high plateaus reachable by cable car within minutes. This combination — city and mountain without a car journey — is rare to find anywhere else, and it makes Bolzano a genuine hub for exploring the whole Dolomites region.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Ötzi is housed at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, a few minutes' walk from Piazza Walther.

The mummy was found in 1991 in the Ötztal Alps on the Austrian border and is roughly 5,300 years old. On display alongside the body are clothing, tools and weapons found with him — including a copper axe that proved decisive for dating. Plan one to two hours for the visit. In peak season it is worth buying tickets online in advance.
