Why Apulia?

What defines Apulia as a beach destination?

Apulia has two coasts close together: the rockier Adriatic in the east and the Ionian Sea with sandy beaches in the west.

Apulia (Puglia) forms the heel of the Italian boot. Brindisi Airport sits centrally on the Adriatic, from where both coasts are reachable in under an hour — an advantage hardly any other coastal region of Italy offers.

The two coasts differ noticeably. The Adriatic in the east is rockier, with clear water and small bays, good for snorkelling. The Ionian Sea in the west has long, fine sandy beaches with shallow entry — for families with small children the better choice, but in high summer heavily crowded. The narrowness of the peninsula makes a switch between coasts easy: from most quarters, both are reachable within an hour.

Inland lies the reason why Apulia is more than a bathing coast: Lecce with its exuberant baroque, Ostuni as a white town on a hill, and Alberobello with the Trulli — cone-shaped stone houses that have been UNESCO World Heritage since 1996.

Which coast suits me?

Because the peninsula is narrow, you don't have to commit — both coasts are reachable from most quarters. The Adriatic is closer to the airport and rockier; the Ionian has flatter sandy beaches but is more crowded in high summer. For a first stay, a base in the Adriatic hinterland — around Ostuni — is a good compromise.

When is the best time to visit Apulia?

The season runs from May to October. May is warm and in bloom, the sea still fresh. June is swimmable and still quiet. In July it turns hot, and in August the Italian holiday season arrives — that's when the Ionian beaches in particular fill up, and rental cars and coastal accommodation get expensive. September is our recommendation: warm sea, mild days, noticeably fewer visitors. October is milder but the first hotels start to close. From November to April SkyAlps does not fly the route.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Trulli are round stone houses with cone-shaped roofs made of dry-laid limestone slabs, built without mortar.

They occur almost exclusively in the Valle d'Itria; the largest concentration stands in Alberobello, UNESCO World Heritage since 1996. The town has around 1,500 Trulli, some still lived in, some open as small museums or shops. Alongside it are other Trulli-rich villages such as Locorotondo and Cisternino — less busy and, for many, more authentic than Alberobello itself.
