Why the Greek Islands with children?
SkyAlps flies to Kefalonia, Preveza and Corfu direct from Bolzano — around two hours, no changes with children and luggage.
The Ionian Islands lie on the western side of Greece and are markedly greener than the Aegean: olive groves, cypresses and pine forests instead of bare rocks. That means shade, which with children in high summer makes the difference.
SkyAlps flies three destinations direct: Kefalonia, Preveza as the gateway to Lefkada, and Corfu. The flight time is around two hours. More important than the pure flight time is the absence of a change — the usual route runs via Rome, Athens or Munich, with waiting times, luggage transfers and fractious children in transit halls. The direct flight cuts all that out.
On the ground there is no continuous hotel front like on the big package-holiday islands, but rather individual bays with a few houses each. Many beaches slope gently and are well suited to small children. Greek hospitality towards children is famous in any case — kids are welcome in tavernas until late, and no one minds a bit of noise. Family hotels typically have children's pools and a kids' club, and many properties lie directly on the beach with shallow entry.
Which island suits families?
The three destinations differ significantly. Corfu is the best developed, and many hotels lie within walking distance of the beach — good if you want to manage without a car. Kefalonia and Lefkada are quieter and more spread out; there you'll need a rental car, but you'll find bays almost to yourselves. Which suits best depends primarily on the age of the children and whether you're happy to drive on holiday.
Corfu
Good infrastructure, old town is UNESCO World Heritage
Kefalonia and Lefkada
Little building, long beaches on the west coast
Which flights are available from Bolzano to the Greek Islands?

When is the best time to visit the Greek Islands?
The season runs from May to October. In May it's pleasantly warm, but the sea for children is often still too fresh. June is ideal: warm, swimmable and still quiet. July and August regularly reach over 30°C — then choose a hotel with shade and pool, and use the midday hours for indoor breaks or shaded beaches. September is our favourite month: warm sea, mild days, noticeably fewer visitors — and if travel dates outside the school holidays are possible, considerably cheaper. October is still mild but the first hotels start to close. From November to April SkyAlps does not fly the destinations.
Frequently asked questions
With small children, Corfu is usually the simpler choice: the infrastructure is better, many hotels lie directly on the beach, buses run regularly, and pharmacies and doctors are easy to reach.
Kefalonia and Lefkada are more spread out — the loveliest bays lie far apart and are often only reachable via winding country roads. For families with older children this can be an advantage: more space, more adventure, fewer tourists. Small children usually still prefer short walks between hotel, beach and taverna, and there Corfu wins.
