Why Alta Badia?

Why ski in Alta Badia?

Alta Badia sits at the foot of the Sella massif and is one of the most convenient entry points onto the Sellaronda — plus it has the densest Michelin-starred dining in the Dolomites.

Alta Badia is the upper Val Badia, with the villages of Corvara, Colfosco, La Villa, San Cassiano, Badia and La Val, at 1,300 to 1,700 metres. Surrounding it stand the Sella, Puez and Fanes groups — all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.

From a skier's point of view, location is the decisive factor: Corvara sits directly on the Sella massif, and the Sellaronda starts practically at the door. The circuit crosses four passes through Val Gardena, Arabba and Val di Fassa, and can be skied in a day, in either clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. All areas belong to Dolomiti Superski, so a single ski pass suffices.

The pistes in the valley itself are mostly wide and of medium difficulty, well-groomed and sunny — classic cruising terrain. One exception is the Gran Risa near La Villa, a World Cup slope for decades and a serious challenge for regular skiers. Alta Badia counts a total of around 130 piste kilometres within its own boundaries, expanded via connections to the whole Dolomiti Superski network.

How do you ski in Alta Badia?

Alta Badia has two levels. Locally, the pistes around Corvara, La Villa and San Cassiano are wide, sunny and well-groomed — ideal for full cruising days. If you want to go further, in Corvara you step straight onto the Sellaronda and ski the circuit around the Sella massif. Return trips to distant Dolomite areas — Kronplatz, Tre Cime — are possible via car or ski bus, but usually not necessary: 130 kilometres are already plenty.

When is the best time for a ski holiday in Alta Badia?

The winter season starts in early December and ends in early April. December is busiest around Christmas and New Year, and there's the World Cup at the Gran Risa. January is the quietest month after the holidays, with good snow. February brings the school half-term holidays and is the most expensive month — but with the most reliable snow. March is often the most attractive month: still-good snow up high, more sun and lower prices. In November and April the ski area is closed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The Sellaronda is a ski circuit that loops the Sella massif over four passes, linking Alta Badia, Val Gardena, Arabba and Val di Fassa.

It can be skied in either direction and takes five to seven hours depending on your pace and lift queues. The route is well signposted; local ski passes at all four connected valleys are included in Dolomiti Superski. Start early — the last lifts to complete the loop usually close in the afternoon, and being caught out means an expensive taxi home.
