Why Val Gardena?

Why ski in Val Gardena?

Val Gardena offers 121 piste kilometres, is connected to the Sellaronda and to the Alpe di Siusi, and lies in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.

Val Gardena (Gröden) has three villages: Ortisei (St. Ulrich) at 1,236 metres, Santa Cristina and Selva (Wolkenstein) at 1,563 metres. They line up along the same valley and are all directly connected to the ski area. The official languages are Ladin, German and Italian — most locals speak Ladin as their first language.

The ski area comprises 121 piste kilometres and is part of Dolomiti Superski. From Selva you step directly onto the Sellaronda, the loop around the Sella massif through four valleys. On the opposite side of the valley, a gondola from Ortisei takes you onto the Seceda in four minutes — 2,450 metres, with a view onto the Odle (Geisler) group. From Ortisei there is also a connection to the Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest high-altitude meadow — an area with wide, easy pistes for family days.

Val Gardena also has a sporting history. On the Saslong at Santa Cristina, the World Cup takes place every year in December — downhill and Super-G. Outside the race week the piste is open to all — one of the few opportunities in the Alps to ski an original World Cup course. Alongside it stands the FIS Snowboard Cross track, and around the valley are cross-country trails and toboggan runs.

Which ski areas are there in Val Gardena?

Val Gardena spreads across both sides of the valley. On one side lie Seceda and Col Raiser with views of the Odle group; on the other, Ciampinoi, Dantercepies and the crossing to the Alpe di Siusi. From Selva the Sellaronda begins. Everything belongs to Dolomiti Superski, so a single ski pass covers all the surrounding regions.

When is the best time for a ski holiday in Val Gardena?

The season starts in early December and ends in early April. In December the World Cup on the Saslong is the big event, and the race week is correspondingly full; then come Christmas and New Year with the highest prices. January is quieter after the holidays and often has good snow. February brings the school half-term holidays and is the most expensive month, but usually with the most reliable conditions. March combines sun, longer days and still-good snow up top. In November and April the ski area is closed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes.

The Saslong near Santa Cristina, outside race preparation and the World Cup week in December, is a regular piste open to all. It is classified as a black run and is considerably more demanding than most pistes in the valley — the Camel Bumps in the lower section are challenging even for good skiers. In race week the piste is closed for training and the runs; the surrounding pistes remain open. A test descent should be planned early, before your legs are tired.
